帝国航空の調査を始める半沢
役員会で、帝国航空の再建案について話し合う大和田たち。考えを問われた半沢直樹は、帝国航空のメインバンクである開発投資銀行を味方につけることで、債権放棄を拒否しようと考えていることを主張する。
半沢は田島とともに連日帝国航空の現状を調査する。債権は厳しいという田島に対し、各部署での教育が行き届いているため、挨拶が行き届いていることに注目していた半沢。
半沢は、これまでの経験から倒産する会社は社外の人に挨拶をしなくなるという現象を田島に伝える。
だが、国内腺の場所を探している客がいることを乗務員に伝えると、自ら案内するのではなく係の者を呼びに行ってしまう。これが縦割りの弊害だと言う半沢。
再建案を提案する半沢
定期的にリニューアルしている制服の採寸が行われる中、木滝を紹介される半沢。木滝は、機長である自分は経営面にはタッチしていないと言い、自分の仕事ではないと言う。
それに対し半沢は、部署を超えて問題を共有することで再建の道が開けると指摘。社長の神谷の話ですら聞かない木滝だったが、話を聞くと言うのだった。
2週間後、帝国航空の再建案を作成した半沢。経営陣の待遇の大幅削減や人員整理に加え、パイロットの待遇の見直しなどが盛り込まれた再建案に、神谷たちは反発する。
だが、このままでは政府によって帝国航空の再建は不可能だと指摘されてしまうだけだと言う半沢。帝国航空を内側から変えていくという姿勢を示すべきだと伝えると、改めて頼むと言う神谷だった。
情報漏えい？
神谷との話し合いの最中、社員たちに再建案がメールで漏れてしまう問題が起きる。そこには、上層部の待遇の削減の項目が記載されていなかったため、木滝は反発して半沢に「もうあなたの話は聞かない」と言う。
銀行に戻った半沢に、開発投資銀行の谷川が話を聞かせて欲しいと訪ねてくる。谷川は帝国航空が再建する可能性はないと言い、政府に任せるべきだと主張。
半沢が一緒に再建案を進めて欲しいと頼むと谷川は、社内にいる不穏分子を突き止めない限りは同じことが起こると言うのだった。
半沢は、情報漏えいした人物の特定を瀬名に頼んでいた。それによると、三重県にいる丸岡という人物のアドレスからメールが送られていたことが分かる。
半沢は早速三重県に向かい、瀬名が調べてくれた住所を訪ねる。そこは「丸岡商工」というオフィスがあり、社員らしき女性から社長が今東京にいることを聞かされてとんぼ返りすることに。
聞かされたホテルに向かうと、そこでは議員である永田の兄のパーティーが行われていて、白井や箕部も出席していた。
永田が情報を漏らしたと考えた半沢は、山久に調査を依頼。永田が丸岡商工を紹介し、多額のお金が水増しして流れていることが判明するのだった。
永田を問い詰める半沢
紀本から呼び出された半沢は、永田が銀行にいた時に兄への政治献金を不正に行っていた疑いがあったことを聞かされる。決定的な証拠が無かったため、帝国航空への出向という形でおさめたのだった。
社員たちへの説明会当日、永田の煽りも手伝って反発を受ける半沢。だが半沢は、その場で丸岡商工のことを話し始める。
再建案が通れば取引先である丸岡商工も切られることから、それを阻止するために再建案を漏らしたと主張する半沢。それに対し反論する永田だったが、帝国航空のハイヤー内で丸岡と2人で乗っている際のドライブレコーダーの映像が流れる。
メールのことについて話している場面もあり、会場内は騒然とする。それでも白状しない永田に、新たな映像を見せる半沢。
そこには、丸岡が乗るハイヤーに乗り込んで水増し問題について言及する半沢の姿があった。さらに木滝も乗り込んできて、水増しを操作していたのが永田であると白状する丸岡。
メールを漏えいしたのも永田に頼まれて丸岡が行い、さらには水増しした中から永田の兄への政治献金が流れていたことも判明するのだった。
乃原に呼び出された半沢は、白井の会見通り債権放棄を検討するよう要求される。だが、既に回答は決まっていると言い、債権放棄を拒否すると断言するのだった。
