謎の変死体
桑原が朝顔の家で朝食を食べている時に、「大丸町で変死体」の知らせが入り、朝顔と桑原は現場に向かった。朝顔が検視すると、青酸化合物を飲んでいる可能性ありとのことだった。
遺体は女性、アサダミオさん。早速、興雲大学法医学教室での解剖が始まった。法医学者の藤堂が「午前１０：２８、N６０１番解剖を開始します」と告げ、朝顔のいつもの儀式「お願いします。教えて下さい」という言葉から始まった。
解剖の結果、青酸ガスを飲んでいる可能性があった。腕や肩、背中の部分が鮮紅色になっていた。朝顔が胃の内容物を確認すると青酸カリウムが含まれていた。普通の大学生がどのように青酸カリウムを手にいれたのか。
ロシア文学科の女子学生、バイトはパン屋さん。警察でも捜査が進められていた。実は、他にも３名、青酸カリで自殺の事例があったため、今回の事件との関係性を確認することになった。3件とも亡くなった方のパソコンやスマホのデータが削除されていた。
一方、平は東北で妻の里子の痕跡を探し続けていた。8年間もずっと探し続けている。
そのうちの一人から「おクスリ学院」のサイトの履歴があり、被害者はそのサイトから青酸カリを手に入れたらしい。警察は、そのサイトを公表するとしばらくしてサイトが削除されていた。それが警察の狙いだった。
警察への挑戦状か？
公園のベンチで新たに男性の変死体が見つかった。首を刃物のようなものでこれで5人目の事例だ。興雲大学に解剖の依頼が入った。
朝顔が遺体の胃の内容物の解剖を始めたとき、胃の中に青酸ガスがまだ残っていて朝顔はガスを吸い込んでしまった。朝顔はICUに運ばれ一命をとりとめた。
青酸ガスが除菌がされ、茶子先生を筆頭に遺体の解剖が再開された。胃の中に大量のカプセルが入っていた。カプセルの一つを確認すると、カプセル中に更にカプセルが、更にカプセルといくつものカプセルが重ねられていた。カプセルを重ねることで青酸カリが体内に流れるのを遅らせたと考えられた。
更に調べていくと警察のバッチが入っていた。解剖をするはずという考えられた警察関係者へのメッセージなのか。
事件解決！
男性の身元が判明した。村田智樹、４１歳「おクスリ学院」のサイト経営者で、末期がん患者だった。警察にサイトを公表され腹いせに今回の自殺を企てたらしい。警察関係者にあてた手紙が見つかった。
あらたな命のいぶき
朝顔が無事に退院となった。今回の入院で朝顔のお腹の中に赤ちゃんが授かったことがわかった。
平が法医学教室に挨拶にくと、茶子先生はまだ里子を探しているのか尋ねた。平は、義理の父の浩之から、「もうここには来ないでくれ」と言われたことを話した。それでも平は「お願いします。探させてください」と懇願した。強い思いの表れだった。茶子は、「あなたはご自分のしたいことをするべきです」と伝えた。
朝顔は、祖父に電話し結婚と妊娠を報告した。平には見せない何とも柔らかい表情の祖父だった。朝顔は、祖父が平に言ったことを感じとっていて、祖父に「じいちゃんは、お父さんがお母さんを探すのいや？」と聞いた。朝顔は父を好きなようにさせたかった。
その言葉に少し納得した様子の祖父だった。平の実直な思いはどこから来ているのか。心に秘めた思いがあるようです。
朝顔の赤ちゃんは無事心音が確認された。桑原はすっかり父親モードで朝顔が心配でたまらないらしい。産婦人科の先生から「お父さん、大丈夫ですよ」と言われてお父さんモードに更にスイッチが入ったようです。
