由利への挑戦状
犯罪心理学者として活躍する由利麟太郎に、花髑髏という名の人物から挑戦状が届く。興味を持った由利は、助手の三津木俊助と一緒にメールにあった場所へ向かう。
すると、そこに運ばれてきた冷凍庫に血痕を見つけた由利。開くと中には女性が縛られていて、胸にはナイフが刺さっていた。
救急車を呼び、業者に依頼したという日下瑛造の屋敷で京都府警の等々力と待ち合わせた由利。日下に呼ばれた研究者の湯浅も現れる。
2階に人影を見たため日下の息子・瑛一の部屋を見に行くと、ベッドの隙間には袋に入って血まみれのダウンコートが。
その後、研究室から湯浅の叫び声がして駆けつけると、そこにはナイフが刺さった日下の遺体があった。そばには頭蓋骨が置かれていた。
そこに、治療を終えて帰ってきた日下の養女・瑠璃子が現れる。
20年前の実験
日下と瑠璃子から話を聞く由利たちは、瑛一が瑠璃子との結婚を反対されたため家を飛び出していたことが判明する。
瑠璃子は自分が養女であることは知らずに育ったものの、瑛一から知らされ、結婚しようと言われたのだった。
湯浅は、日下から実験に協力して欲しいと呼ばれたのだと言う。だが、犯人が湯浅を第一発見者にして疑いを向けようとしていたと考える由利たち。
湯浅は、20年以上前、日下とともに超音波による暴力衝動を抑制する遺伝子の研究をしていた。そこに強盗犯の八十川が運び込まれたため、実験を行った日下。
暴力性は治まったものの、副作用も出て自分の手で自分の首をへし折って死んでしまったのだった。その後、遺体を調べた日下たちだったが、原因は分からなかったと言う。
八十川の頭蓋骨を戒めのため、研究室に置き続けたのだと打ち明ける湯浅。罪の重さから逃れるために八十川の遺族を探した日下だったが、妻子を見つけることはできなかったのだった。
犯人が自殺？
日下の家にはもう1人、魁太という12歳の男の子を引き取っていて、ゲームばかりして引きこもっていた。魁太の部屋に行くが誰もおらず、部屋には「デビー」と書かれた絵が飾られていた。
由利たちが帰った後、過去のことを思い出す瑠璃子。瑠璃子は日下から性的暴力を受けていた。そこに、瑛一が戻ってくる。
自分はやっていないと言い、魁太がやったんだろうと言う瑛一。
研究室を見に行った由利は、頭蓋骨が置かれた棚が可動することに気づく。動かすとそこには隠し部屋があり、中には実験が行われていた形跡があった。
瑠璃子が研究室から魁太の叫び声を聞いたことがあると言っていたことから、魁太はそこでモルモットにされていた可能性も。
八十川の息子・アキラの行方を捜しに行った由利の元に、等々力から電話がかかってくる。鉄くずの塊から血が滴っているのが発見され、中で魁太が圧縮されているとみられた。
近くの物置に隠れていたらしく、置かれていたパソコンにはゲームが入っていた。その中で「デビー」と会話していた魁太。部屋の中の板には「GAME OVER」とも書かれていた。
日下による脳の実験に耐え切れず日下を殺した魁太が、その後自殺したとマスコミは騒ぐのだった。
瑠璃子の正体
日下の生前、研究所を覗いた瑠璃子は、魁太が隠し部屋で実験されていたのを見つけ助け出す。すると日下は、育ててやっているのだから被検体になるのは当たり前だと言い返す。
その後、魁太を連れて行っても構わないと言う日下は、「母として息子がまともな生活ができるようにしないとな」と言う。魁太は、日下との間にできた瑠璃子の子どもだったのだ。
その後、瑠璃子は研究室で「やっぱり、こうするしかありません」と言い、机の上のナイフで日下を刺したのだった。
瑠璃子の元に来た瑛一に、行きたいところがあると連れ出した瑠璃子。
研究室にやってきた由利は、八十川の子どもがアキラという女の子であったことを話し、さらにそれが瑠璃子であると告げる。
瑠璃子の部屋のキャンバスの裏に隠されたノートを見つけた由利。そのノートには、20年前の八十川の実験のことが書かれていた。
瑛一は日下から全てを聞かされ、日下と魁太を殺して瑠璃子と結婚しようとしていた。それを聞いた瑠璃子は、魁太を守るために死んだことにしてゲームの入った箱に隠し、日下を殺したのだった。
瑛一を連れ出した場所で、ヒモを首に巻き殺そうとする瑠璃子だったが、そこに由利たちが駆けつけ止めるのだった。
魁太は安全な場所で保護されると聞いて安心した瑠璃子は、罪を償うために逮捕されるのだった。

さすがに横溝正史が原作だけあって、本格的なミステリーでした。伏線もいくつも貼られていて、なるほど！となる部分も多かったです。
重めのストーリーではあるものの、助手役の志尊淳さんの明るい雰囲気や、飄々とした警部役の田辺誠一さんがいい味を出してくれていました。主演の吉川晃司さんの佇まいも素敵でした。

事件が起こる古い洋館はいかにも横溝正史の世界なんだけれど、今回は現代という設定なのでスマホやPCは存在している。
でも違和感はない。
助手の三津木も志尊淳の賢そうな演技がよかった。
