呪われたマンション
いつもの激辛店で、野津田が真奈子に志保の引き抜きの話を伝える。喜里子が持ってきた国際プロェクトの事務局長の話で、もし行くことになれば研究室の仕事はできなくなると言う。
そこに店員が料理を運んで来るが、唐辛子を入れ忘れるという失敗を犯す。話を聞くと自分のマンションで橋爪という男性が死体で見つかり、呪われていると話す。
店員から調べて欲しいと言われ、真奈子と野津田の2人でマンションに向かう。現場には「－23」と書かれた跡があり、不審に思う真奈子。
刑事の栗原が声をかけてきて、死因が脳挫傷であることや、遺体のそばにペンだけが落ちていたことなどを話してくる。
マンションの管理組合長から話を聞くことになり、真奈子も一緒に行かないかと誘われ行くことになるのだった。
管理組合長の新藤によると、橋爪は3年前に妻を亡くしてから一人暮らしで、少し気難しいところがあったと話す。
マンションが呪われていることについて尋ねると、階段で転倒する事故が続いたり、防犯ベルが突然鳴ったり、防火シャッターが急に閉まったりすると言う。
話を終えて外に出ると、上から突然植木鉢が落ちて来る。危うく難を逃れたものの、ポルターガイストだと怯える野津田。
数字の謎
マンションの住民たちが集まり、栗原や新藤が説明をするが、住民同士で揉め始めてしまう。
そこに駆けつけた真奈子を、住民たちに紹介する栗原。新藤から詳しい話を聞くと、3か月で4回も転倒事故が起きていると言い、他にも不自然な事故が続いていることについて話す。
橋爪について真奈子に話す店員。子供を預かってくれたりと親切にしてくれたことを話す。古くからの住民には厳しく注意されるが、橋爪は優しかったと言う店員。
子供が持っていた手帳に、橋爪の名前が入っていることに気づく真奈子。中を見ると数字がたくさん書かれていて、エレベーターで拾ったと言われる。
真奈子から渡された手帳を元に推理をする栗原は、書かれた数字の一部は部屋番号ではないかと考える。
新藤と共に住民たちの部屋を周り、話を聞こうとする栗原は、呪われていると連呼する榊という住民の部屋番号の後ろに「－23」と書かれていることに気づく。
榊の部屋に行くと、橋爪は「雨の呪いにかかって呪い殺された」と話す榊。そのことを真奈子に伝えると、何か思いついたような顔をする真奈子。
野津田に、ここ最近の天気を調べさせる真奈子。橋爪が雨の日にマンションを徘徊していたことに気づく。
引き抜きの話の相談をしたい志保ったが、真奈子はマンションに行くと言い断る。避けずに研究室の将来も考えて欲しいと言う志保に、引き抜きの話を受ければいいと言う真奈子。
エレベーターに閉じ込められる真奈子
雨の中マンションを訪れた真奈子は、エレベーターが突然止まり閉じ込められてしまう。
郁美や野津田が真奈子に電話をかけるが、繋がらない。志保はマンションに行くといった真奈子と言葉を思い出す。
エレベーターの中で何かに気づく真奈子。そこに志保が助けに来て、エレベーターから出ることができるのだった。
翌日、エレベーターの機械室を見せてもらう真奈子。機械室の中はかなり湿度が高いことに気づいた真奈子がエレベーターの底の部分を見に行くと、雨が降った時に水がかなりたまってしまうことが判明する。
店員の子供に、エレベーターの中で他にも拾ったものがあるはずだと聞きに行き、定規を渡されるのだった。
その定規を持ってエレベーターに行き、エレベーターの床とフロアの床面の差を測る真奈子。
その後、住民を集めて説明する真奈子は、エレベーターの老朽化を指摘する。
雨の日に電気系統の不具合が起きやすいと考えた橋爪は、雨が降った日のフロアの差を手帳にメモし続けていたのだった。
亡くなった日も、計測中に電気系統のトラブルでエレベーターが上昇してしまい、頭を打ち付けた後、フロアに投げ出されてしまったのだった。
それを聞いた住民たちは、エレベーターのメーカーやメンテナンス業者に責任転嫁する純民たち。
エレベーターを新しく変えるように勧められたことを話した新藤は、住民たちから激しく責められる。だが、住民たちに説明したものの、お金がかかると取り合わなかったのだと憤る新藤。
志保の決断
全ての謎が分かった住民たちは、自分たちはどうすればいいのかと真奈子に尋ねてくる。
老朽化したエレベーターは安全の保障はできないと言い、そのことを橋爪が一人で伝えようと記録を取り続けていたと話す。
マンションに呪いがあるとすれば、住民同士で対立し不安を煽ったことだと指摘する。そしてもし呪いが解ける方法があるとしたら、それは皆さんの愛だと言うのだった。
その後、住民みんなで協力し、呪いの札をはがして行くのだった。
帰り際、真奈子を追ってきた栗原は「僕を弟子にしてください」と手を差し出す。その手をそっと握りながら「悪いけど間に合ってます」と言う真奈子だった。
近所に息子一家が住んでいて、一緒に暮らそうと言われていた橋爪だったが、やるべきことがあると断っていたらしいと話す志保。
それを聞いた真奈子は、志保のやるべきことも国際プロジェクトにあるんじゃないかと言うのだった。迷うなら人のためになる方を選ぶように言う真奈子。
喜里子に研究室に残ると伝える志保。真奈子の失敗学を支えることが人のためになると考えたと話すのだった。

マンションの呪いだと騒ぐ住民たちでしたが、実態のある理由にスッキリしました。橋爪が1人で必死にエレベーターの不具合について調査していた姿と、その努力が報われなかったことに少し切なくなりました。
自分たちのことしか考えない人が多い中、同じマンションに住む住民として助け合うことの重要さを感じた回でした。

その事を研究室と自分に重ねてた志保さんと、宇宙エレベータープロジェクトと志保さんに重ねて背中を押したまなこさん。志保さんが残ってくれて良かった。
