あらすじ
第二次世界大戦後、大阪から滋賀県信楽に移り住んだ少女：川原喜美子が信楽焼に惹かれ、男の世界と言われる陶芸の世界へ飛び込む。青年陶芸家と結婚し、息子を授かるも別れ、貧乏な中にも自らの窯を開き、独自の世界を切り開こうとする。

喜美子と絵
前回、夜中に慶乃川から貰った紙に絵を描き始めた喜美子。喜美子は絵を2枚ほど描くとそのまま眠ってしまった。
翌朝、喜美子が起きると草間は喜美子の絵を見ていた。「おはよう。」と喜美子に声をかける草間。
草間が「よく描けてる。すごいなあ。上手だね。」と褒めると、喜美子は嬉しそうに笑った。
喜美子は再び絵を描き始め、昼になり学校に行く時間になっても絵を描いていた。喜美子はマツの呼びかけにも気づかないほど夢中で色を塗っていた。
夜になり大野の家で飲んでいた常治を迎えに行く喜美子。そこで陽子は思わず、喜美子が学校に行かなかったことを話してしまう。
ベロベロに酔っ払っていた常治は「学校行かんかった！？ああ？どうでもええ。おなごに学問は必要ない。勉強なんかできなくてもかめへん。うちの家訓や。」と行って喜美子の頭を撫でると、その場で座り込んでしまった。
その夜、草間は部屋で1人悲しそうに一枚の写真を見ていた。自分と嫁の結婚記念の写真だった。
こんなもん落書きや
翌日学校で、授業も聞かずに夢中で絵を描く喜美子。先生に「いつまで経っても読み書きできるようになりませんよ。」と叱られるが、「必要ないと言われています。お父ちゃんに。」と昨日、常治に言われたことをそのまま先生に伝えた。
家に帰ると喜美子は、草間、直子、マツに紙芝居を見せる。紙芝居と言っても、喜美子が描いた絵、三枚を見せるだけのものだ。喜美子はタヌキの絵、直子の絵、琵琶湖の絵を見せ、お辞儀をした。
直子は「もう終わったん？」と不満そうだったが、マツは「上手やな~」と褒めた。
そこに常治が血相を変えて怒鳴り込んでくる。「お前、学校で何言うた？丸熊の社長に笑われたがな！」喜美子の同級生でもあり丸熊陶業のお嬢様・照子が社長に喜美子が言ったことを話していたようだ。
常治は喜美子に「読み書きくらいできるようになれ！何の取り柄もないもん、勉強くらいできんくてどないすんねん！」と叱る。
すると草間は「何の取り柄もないなんて。」と割って入り、喜美子の絵を常治に見させる。しかし、常治は「こんなもん落書きや。丸熊の社長の娘さんが勉強教えてくれる言うとったわ。今すぐ遊び行って来い。」と言う。
喜美子はうしばらく黙ったまま悔しそうにうつむいていると、持っていた絵を地面に投げ捨て「ほな行ってくる！」と笑顔で出て行った。
突然の別れ
言われた通り照子の所に行くと、信作も呼びつけられていた。教科書を持ってきた照子は「まずは理科の教科書から。」と理科の教科書を喜美子に読ませる。
漢字が読めない喜美子は、照子に教わりながらたどたどしく読み始める。喜美子は教科書の内容がじゃがいもの育て方ということに気づくと「ウチ、じゃがいも育てるで！」と嬉しそうに大声で読みだした。
喜美子は家に帰ると、マツから草間が出ていったことを知らされる。草間は「喜美子の紙芝居の代金だ」と言って、少しのお金を置いて出て行ったのだ。
「こんなん貰ったけど、読まれへんもんな？」と、マツは草間から預かった喜美子宛の手紙を出す。喜美子は「読める！水汲んでくる！」と手紙を取って外に走っていった。
井戸の前で手紙を開ける喜美子。

しかし、漢字ばかりの手紙を喜美子が読めるはずもなく、喜美子は手紙を見ながら涙をこぼした。
喜美子に優しく、時に厳しく接してくれた理解者だった草間との別れは喜美子にはとてもつらいものだった。

「スカーレット」5話の感想
ちょっと常治が無茶苦茶すぎますね（笑）逆ギレした挙げ句、喜美子の絵をボロクソに言ってたのは見ていて胸が痛かったです。
前回、喜美子は慶乃川の焼き物をボロクソに言っていましたが、言われる側の気持ちを身を持って知ったということでしょうか。
常治は最後、喜美子が捨てた絵を拾っていましたね。常治も後悔しているのだと思います。というかそうであってほしい（笑）
喜美子の絵を見た草間は具体的に絵の素晴らしさを語っていましたが、芸術方面に詳しいのでしょうか。
草間は喜美子が読み書きできないと知った上で、漢字の多い手紙を残しましたが、これは読み書き出来るように頑張ってというメッセージかな、と私は思いました。
