なつは東洋動画で働く大沢に敵視されるも、なつの才能と情熱を認められ受け入れられる。
天陽は帯広の展覧会で賞を取る。両親になつのことは諦めろ、と言われ複雑な心情になる。なつの、”私はここで生きていく”という手紙を読んで天陽は涙した。
なつは仲の推薦の元、再びアニメーターの試験を受けるが不合格。諦めずに勉強を続けている。
照男が砂良にプロポーズし、砂良はそれを受け入れた。

次回作のキャラクター募集
前回、見事動画の試験に合格したなつ。新しい部署を紹介してもらう。自分専用の机に思わずなつの顔はほころんだ。
夏を迎えた東洋動画。アニメーターたちを呼び集める井戸原と仲。次回作の長編映画「わんぱく牛若丸」を発表する。
そこで、アニメーターたちからキャラクターを集めるという。脚本をアニメーターたちに渡し、キャラクターの絵を描いてもらい、そこから採用するというものだ。
アニメーターの部署に社長の大杉が現れ、アニメーターたちをねぎらう。
大杉はなつと目が合うと、気まずそうに目をそらした。（以前、大杉の一存でなつを試験に不合格したことがある）
大杉は「ここは若い女の子がいいですねえ。みなさん、お母さんは昔こんな漫画映画を作っていたんだ、と自分のお子さんに誇れるような立派な仕事をしてください。」と言い笑った。
なつは苦い表情でそれを見ていた。
昼休み、パンを齧りながら茜と話すなつ。
「なんですかあれ。お母さんは昔こんな漫画映画を作っていたんだって自分の子どもに誇れ、ってなんですか。それってその時にはアニメーターを辞めてるってことじゃないですか。」
と言うなつ。茜は「違うの？」と不思議そうに首を傾げる。
なつは「茜さんはそれで良いんですか？結婚したり子供産んだらアニメーター辞めちゃうんですか？そんなのおかしいですよ。せっかく努力してアニメーターになったのに。」と憤る。
それを聞いていた大沢が「会社から辞めないでって引き止められるようなアニメーターになればいいんじゃない？まだ、なんにもできないのに文句ばっか言ってないで。」とたしなめ去って行った。
ちはるの居場所
信哉がなつと咲太郎の元を訪れる。妹のちはるが見つかったという。
ちはるを預かっていた親戚・川谷としと結婚した”川谷こういち”が千葉の船橋にいることが判明。
こういちは戦争で脚を怪我して農業ができなくなった。それで引っ越ししていたという。
信哉はこういちの家を見に行き、ちはるらしい女性を見たのだが、それがちはるだとはわからなかったという。
なつは咲太郎と、お盆の8月15日にちはるに会いにいくことを決めた。
ちはるに会いに行くなつたち
8月15日、なつと咲太郎は信哉に教えてもらった、こういちの家の住所に行く。
二人が家の前で立ち止まっていると、杖をついて左脚を引きずりながら歩く男性とそれを支えながら歩く女性が出てきた。
二人はなつたちに気づくと軽く会釈してその場を通り過ぎようとした。
女性の顔を見たなつは思わず
「ちはる？」
と声をかける。女性と男性は驚いた顔で振り返りなつを見る。
じっと見つめ合う女性となつ、咲太郎。女性はどこかピンときていないようだった。

・信哉が、ちはるらしき女性が千葉の船橋にいることを突き止めた。

なつに声をかけられた時の、ちはるの表情が微妙でしたね。あまり覚えていないんでしょうか。それとも、兄妹の再会を嬉しく思っていないのか・・・。あるいは別人なのか。
感動の再会とはいかなそうです。
次週予告を見る限り、辛い経験をしてきたのかもしれませんね。

白蛇姫の仕上げが終わり一段落ついたなつ。新劇で出会った亀山蘭子が白蛇姫の声優を担当することになった。
なつは三度、動画の試験を受け合格。ついに、アニメーターとなる。
信哉が、ちはるらしき女性の居場所を突き止める。なつと咲太郎はその女性に会いに行ったのだが、女性はなつたちを見てもピンときていない様子だった。
